Project Title: Evolutionary adaptation of non-conventional industrial yeasts Kluyveromyces marxianus to acetic acid stress and evaluation of adaptation mechanisms

Project No: lzp-2020/2-0082

Period: 1 December 2020 – 31 December 2021

Project costs: 100 389.00 EUR

Principle Investigator: University of Latvia

CollaboratorLatvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre

Summary

The objectives of project are to obtain new knowledge about the mechanism of response of non-conventional yeasts K. marxianus to acetic acid stress during evolutionary adaptation. So far Kluveromyces spp. have been widely researched in terms of biotechnology and less attention has been focused on its basic physiology and the stress response and adaptation mechanisms induced by weak acids. The object of study will be K.marxianus DSM 5422 strain with potential biotechnological application. The physiological and biochemical aspects of adaption mechanisms will be studied by whole genome resequencing and evaluation of transcriptional responses for acetate sensitive and tolerant strains of K.marxianus obtained by experimental evolution. Taking into account that acetate is a by-product of fermentations and it is also present in several industrial substrates, the knowledge obtained as result of this project will allow to optimize and develop more efficient biotechnological processes with these yeasts.
