On January 20, a seminar “SHAP – outstanding presentation skills in science” will be held at the National Library of Latvia.
Science, as any other field that require speaking to various audiences, requires four key elements for outstanding presentation skills:
- The specifics of science – scientific conferences and science-related presentations; the personal brand of the scientist is also important here
- Humor – an integral and important part of any public performance, tasteful and relevant to the specific context of the presentation
- Appearance – looks and especially clothes are a significant channel of communication not only to others but also the speaker him/herself; it complements and enhances the communicated message and forms not only the attitude of the audience, but also the attitude of the speaker towards him/herself and his/her message.
- Public speaking – this includes not only handling stage fever (one of the most widely spread fears globally) but also the instrumental, emotional, and tonal aspects and structure of the speech, the best presentation tools and methods, content and so much more.
Together, this forms a recipe for great performance and presentation skills in science or “SHAP” – Science, Humor, Appearance and Public speaking, to be adopted both by aspiring and young scientists and well-seasoned researchers.
The seminar will be opened by Mārtiņš Daugulis with a talk about presenting in science. After that, Ilze Rassa will talk about the creation of the personal brand, and Baiba Sipeniece-Gavare will share about the use of humor in presentations. Coffee and snack break will be followed by two exciting talks – Aija Strautmane will present about the importance of clothing and appearance and the seminar will be closed by Haralds Burkovskis who will provide valuable advice for anyone who wants to do public speaking.
