RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN BIOMEDICINE FROM GENES TO HUMAN

The Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis and Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre have received the highest possible rating (“5”) in an international evaluation of 40 research institutions across Latvia.

This distinction was awarded to only two institutions nationwide, recognising excellence in research quality, infrastructure, international collaboration, and talent development.

It also reflects a broader positive trajectory in Latvia’s research system — with growing scientific output, stronger global engagement, and an increasingly important role for doctoral training and early-career researchers.

From 31 May 2026, both institutes will unite to form the National Institute of Research and Innovation (NIRI) — bringing together more than 400 scientists across chemistry, pharmacology, drug design and biomedicine.

This step is inspired by international best practices and aims to strengthen research excellence, expand collaboration opportunities, and enhance the institute’s role in European research and innovation.
