Project title: Synthetic Biology for the Sustainable Production of HABP: A Cost-Effective Alternative for Medical Research and Clinical Diagnostics (Synth-HABP)

Project No.: ES RTD/2025/04

Period: 1 April 2025 – 31 March 2027

Project costs: 200 000,00 EUR

Principal Investigator BMC: Dr.biol. Andris Kazāks

Coordinator: Antibody Design Ltd.

Project summary:

We aim to develop a new Hyaluronic Acid Binding Protein (HABP) reagent using synthetic biology to replace the current gold standard derived from animal cartilage. Our recombinant HABP (synth-HABP), expressed in a yeast protein expression platform, will be more sustainable, scalable and cost-effective. The initial target application is the ELF (Enhanced Liver Fibrosis) diagnostic test for liver fibrosis, addressing a significant clinical need. This project will enable the production of an affordable, scalable reagent, facilitating broader usage in medical, research, and diagnostic applications.
