Project title: Healthy Ageing and Resilience through Microbiome Optimization, Nutrition, and Immunity Support (HARMONIS)
Project No.: 6525
Period: 1 Octobers 2024 – 31 March 2027
Project costs: 300 000,00 EUR
Cooperation partner: Embion Technologies SA (Main partner), Cellboxlab
Project summary:
Microbiome research and personalized nutrition have evolved rapidly recently demonstrating its relevance in human health. Given that, it is very important to determine the composition of the gut microbiota and be able to understand how to modulate it through nutrition. Specifically, the use of bioactives can influence the gut health and support the immune system. To interconnect the physiological processes like digestion, immune function and metabolism and as a part of personalised diet, we will develop a novel immune-supporting through microbiome modulation dietary supplement that will be validated by a “gut-on-a-chip” technology that will be further advanced in this project.
The elderly population is constantly increasing and is more prone to many chronic diseases due to inadequate intake of nutrients leading to a dysbiotic microbiome, inflammation and age-related diseases. As published recently, the occurrence of many diseases is linked to inflammations and the immune system. Microbiome modulation and gut health as support for the immune system emerges as a new market for promoting health through nutrition. The current project will create a versatile tool to understand the microbiome condition while novel supplement will support immune system in the population, thus directly impacting overall health and life quality.
