  About BMC
Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (BMC) is a legally independent state research institute engaged in both fundamental and translational research in various areas of biomedicine, including molecular virology, vaccine development, cell biology, genomics and proteomics, cancer biology and immunology. It was established in 1993 on the basis of the Institute of Molecular Biology that in turn originated from the Laboratory of Nucleic Acids Chemistry (Institute of Organic Synthesis) which was world-wide recognised for the pioneering research in the mechanisms of MS2 phage replication, cloning of HBV genome and the production of the recombinant IL2 and α-IFN in 1970-80’s. At present, BMC is comprised of 20 research groups and is headed by director Prof. Elmars Grens and scientific director Prof. Pauls Pumpens, and the Council lead by Prof. Viesturs Baumanis. The research and infrastructure is supported by funding from Latvian Council of Science, Ministry of Education and Science, European Commission, European Regional Development Fund and industry. Highly qualified academic staff, friendly environment and world-class research facilities provide excellent opportunities for undergraduate and doctoral training for national and international students.
