On 6 February 2020, the Latvian Academy of Sciences held an award ceremony for authors of major achievements in science in 2019, with the participation of authors of the greatest achievements, officials of state and government, businessmen, academics, scientific institutions and society.

Reveals new diseases and gene mutations which cause them in Latvia

Fatigue, muscle weakness, tremor. In 2011, a family living in Latvia visited the Latvian Biomedical Research and Studies Centre with such complaints. All of this has resulted in new discoveries, namely, Latvia has detected an unknown disease in the world and the gene mutations that cause it.

Proves the effects of intestinal bacteria for more effective diabetes treatment

Millions of different bacteria live in our body. The Latvian Biomedical Research Centre, after several years of work, has shown how the bacteria in the human intestinal tract affect the treatment of type 2 diabetes patients.

Results of public survey about research biobanks are available

 

 

Latvian Biomedical research and study centre and Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine, University of Latvia are implementing project “Ethically and socially responsible governance of research biobanks in Latvia: analysis of opinions of public, donors and researchers” (funded by Latvian Council of Science No. 2018/2-0171). In the framework of this project in May 2019 the survey on public attitudes towards biobanks in Latvia was carried out.

From January 6 to January 8 at China National Gene Bank in Shenzhen took place international cooperation programmes “Million Microbiome of Humans Project, MMHP” first meeting, where also participated the director of the Latvian Biomedical Research and Studies Centre Jānis Kloviņš.

In the exhibition 12 modern Latvian scientists will be honored

 

 

On Tuesday, January 7, in the Latvian National Library will open an exhibition titled “Science for Latvia” which summarises the stories of 12 current Latvian scientists and their achievements among whom is the leading researcher of the Latvian Biomedical Research and Studies Centre Dr.biol. Dace Pjanova.

Latvian Academy of Sciences names the major achievements of 2019 in Latvian science

In the end of 2019, Latvian Academy of Sciences names ten major achievements in the science of Latvia in 2019, and awarded seven letters of appreciation by the President of Latvian Academy of Sciences.

Diploma ceremony of the new members of Latvian Academy of Sciences

 

 

In 18 December, 2019 at Latvian Academy of Sciences at the Christmas meeting were handed out diplomas of new members of Latvian Academy of Sciences. The diploma was also received by the Chair of the Scientific Council of BMC, Dr. biol., Latvian Academy of Sciences full member Andris Zeltiņš.

INTEGROMED project kick-off meeting on 29th November

 

 

Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (LBMC) welcomed the leading scientists of INTEGROMED consortium- Prof. Charlotte Ling (Lund University, SE), Prof. Ewan Pearson (University of Dundee, UK) and Prof. Eran Segal (Weizmann Institute of Science, IL). The first session of the kick-off meeting was opened by Prof. Jānis Kloviņš and followed by presentations of Diabetes Mellitus research excellence and applications in clinical practice by project partners.

On Friday, November 15, Minister of Education and Science Ilga Šuplinska handed Cabinet of Ministers Appreciation article for a number of professionals in the education and science sector.
